HOME SECURITY
Ready.gov
can help you prepare your home and family for potential disasters
with information about preparing emergency kits and emergency plans.
The National Crime Prevention Council
provides training on how to use
Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED)
to help protect your home and neighborhood from crime.
Depending on where you live, it may be important
to maintain layers of security around your home,
such as motion-sensing lights, alarm systems, monitoring systems,
gate locks, high quality door locks and window locks, etc.
Take a walk around your home, looking for areas of vulnerability
that an intruder might use to gain entry.
Trim bushes near doors, windows and walkways that might provide concealment,
and install lighting in areas that provide cover of darkness.

Home Alarm Systems
An intrusion alarm system can provide an extra layer of
security for your home and comfort for your family.
Here are some informative articles on home alarm systems:
How to Choose a Home Alarm System from eHow.com.
Installing a Home Alarm System from DoItYourself.com.
And www.homesecurity.com
provides a wide variety of home security equipment.
Dogs
Dogs are great companions. They can be very
protective and loyal, once they become part of the
family. Consider a larger breed for home
protection, such as a Rottweiler or a German Shepard.
A good dog is socially well adapted and able to maintain
a good attitude around other dogs, other people and
other domestic animals. Dogs are highly intelligent
pack animals, and will do their best to please the owner.
Consider adopting a dog or rescuing one from a local
animal shelter.
PetFinder.com
makes it easy to locate dogs that are in need of good owners.
Be sure to properly train your dog. A very good video called
Train Your Dog Before Your Dog Trains You
is available from Amazon.com.
We also recommend that you find a formal obedience trainer in your area
and sign up for classes. Both you and your dog will learn from it!
Firearms
We all hope it never comes to it, but if you need to protect
yourself and your family from a home intrusion you'll want
to be prepared for the worst. The shotgun is probably
the best home defense weapon because of its stopping power,
versatility and ease of use. Handguns require more
precision and have less stopping power, but present the
advantage of portability and concealment.
The NRA has an excellent list of
Gun Safety Rules
that everyone should know. Find an
NRA Training Course
near you and sign up. There is no substitute for formal training.
